Course Description:
One
of the two degrees offered in Drama - Drama in the Community is an
unusual course; one of the first and one of the few in the country.
It was established in 1994 and has
built up a vast network of community contacts. It deals in Applied
Drama, a rapidly growing field concerned with the practical
application of drama to social and community issues. Students have
opportunities to work with community groups from schools to youth
centres from care centres to prisons and a variety of others in
between.
The course enables students to
develop skills in workshop planning and management. Students are
given plenty of opportunities to develop links with community groups.
They learn, through observation and talking to people to consider
what kind of workshop experiences or performance might be appropriate
for a particular community group, and tailor work to meet those
needs.
Alongside training in
practical workshop delivery and devising and directing skills,
students receive training in professional aspects of community and
small company work, such as marketing, budgeting, contracting and
fundraising. Throughout the course students have plenty of
opportunity to develop communication skills which are transferable to
all aspects of professional life. In all, we offer a fascinating
variety of opportunities.
