Course Description:
With over 40 academic staff, together with visiting artists and lecturers, Central contains the largest grouping of drama/theatre/performance specialists in the UK. The diversity of this staff body allows for a wide choice of potential supervisors. Furthermore, the college - the national Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre - is pre-eminent in the UK with regard to the industry-specific facilities that can support research through practice. These specialist facilities are at the forefront of what is available in the university sector.
What are the other benefits to a research student studying at Central? Participants are part of one of the largest gatherings of specialist postgraduates in Europe - Central's postgraduate school comprises around 250 students; they participate in Central's annual postgraduate conference, presenting their work, in a variety of formats, to their peers; they are in a community which includes visiting artists and staff who are practitioners in their own fields; they are regularly exposed to, and participate in, the creation of new work in showings and festivals of outcomes throughout the year; they can develop and share their work in an environment that is geared to practice-based research; they are about 20 minutes' tube ride from the British Library and about 25-minutes away from University of London's Senate House library; they have easy access, because of Central's geographical position, to the cultural centre of London with its performance venues, archives, museums, theatres.
If potential participants are thinking about signing up for a research degree but don't think they are quite ready yet, have a look at Central's MA Performance Practices and Research. This runs from January to January and inducts students into thinking about and making work at the cutting edge of the discipline. Alternatively, if students are more interested in developing a knowledge of the workings and history of theatre as an institution, have a look at Central's MA Theatre Studies (Theatre in London) which is taught by top-flight theatre journalists, arts managers and historians and uses the course's London setting as its raw material.
There is also the possibility of being supervised between two different colleges of the University; Central has a formal co-supervision arrangement with Queen Mary University of London. This enables students to have a supervisor in each institution. Please ask about this arrangement when enquiring about research degrees.
Whichever the chosen pathway to it, doctoral study at Central can offer closeness to industry and creative processes, unrivalled facilities and the highest levels of both theoretical and practice-based supervision.
