Course Description:
The theatre Set Constructor works closely with the theatre set designer and members of the production team. The Set Constructor is responsible for building the larger scenic elements that inhabit the theatre space (be it in theatre, video, television or film settings). Applying skills in carpentry, structural design, metal work and mechanical engineering, the role will principally be of problem-solving by using ideas and solutions drawn from all aspects of engineering and industrial practice to interpret and realise the vision of the production.
From the first year, there is the opportunity to work as Set Constructor, collaborating with other Central students and professional practitioners to realise theatre performances in the studio, Embassy Theatre stage and on exhibitions. Students practise their set construction crafts in Central's fully-equipped on-site professional workshop.
Study will indicatively include: Building a specific element of scenery, working to a professional designer's specifications and working closely with technicians to plan how it might be flown in a proscenium arch theatre; Learning basic welding and cutting techniques; Working as part of a team building or adapting scenery for a studio production; Learning and applying engineering skills to other scenic construction techniques; Building a set for a public production, either singly or as part of team; designing and making automated scenery in collaboration with a prop-making student; being the Head of Department on a full-scale realised production in the Embassy Theatre, managing other students building scenery, and co-ordinating with all the other members of the creative and production team; Working ‘on the bench' with a professional scenery building company for a term.
