Course Description:
Costume Construction is a craft which requires the making of garments suited to the modern body, while achieving the correct shape and silhouette for a given era and design. Costume Constructors work closely with the costume designer, and other members of the design and production teams, to interpret the brief and create costumes and accessories to the level of finish demanded by professional practice, be it in theatre, television or film.
Starting in the first year, students will have the opportunity to work in role as costume constructor, in a professionally run wardrobe department with industry-experienced practitioners, on realised performances and exhibitions across a variety of venues - including the Embassy Studio, Embassy Theatre and site-specific shows.
Course content indicatively includes: producing samples for a costume; making a period costume from a pattern that you have drafted; working as part of the wardrobe team on a public production; learning and applying tailoring skills; designing and making a costume for a dance project; Designing and making a costume to your own specifications; being the Head of Department on a full-scale production, managing other students constructing costumes; working with a professional company to create costumes.
