Course Description:
The Prop Maker is responsible for making and sourcing all the props required to support the visual dramatisation of a performance. The diversity of props need to be produced can range from severed body parts to large pieces of intricate period furniture. The skills learned during the course are applicable to all areas of the entertainment industry, including theatre, music video, television and film.
At Central, students have access to a professional level of facilities and are able to learn an extensive range of prop-making techniques, including moulding, casting, fibreglassing, welding, carpentry, and engineering. Starting in the first year, students will be expected to work as prop maker working alongside professional practitioners on realised performances and exhibitions across a variety of venues including the Embassy Studio, Embassy Theatre and site-specific venues.
Study will indicatively include: Learning mould-making and casting in fibre glass and plaster, working to a professional designer's designs; Learning to use hand and power tools and applying this to the creation of a ‘hand prop'; Working as part of a team, building or adapting props for a devised production and for public productions in our professionally equipped Studio and Theatre; Learning and applying MIG welding and a full range of metal working skills; Being Head of Department of a full-scale realised production, managing other students building props and co-ordinating with other members of the creative and production team; Learning advanced moulding techniques to produce body prosthetics to be used in performance; Working in a professional props studio to create props or special effects for film.
