Course Description:
The Sound Design and Music for Performance strand is part of the group of subjects that comprise MA Advanced Theatre Practice, designed especially for individuals wishing to create new and innovative work for the theatre as part of a company.
When joining the course as a sound designer, students will start out by working in their separate theatre discipline. As the year progresses they will soon be working with colleagues from other strands, exploring an integrated language of theatre and building creative teams for the future.
The Sound Design and Music for Performance strand is for those who have some competence in the basic technology of sound or a related discipline. Students will explore the dramatic potential of sound and music, and discover ways of shaping and augmenting performance through creative sound design. They will work in a range of production settings (including text-based theatre, site-specific performance and studio-based work) and have opportunities to propose particular sound-oriented approaches. They will compose and/or design sound for a range of live performances during the year, and may work across live, recorded, acoustic and electronic environments.
This strand allows students to develop further their own abilities as a sound designer and to learn from other experienced practitioners. They will benefit from working with colleagues in groups and companies, so that their own development as a practitioner takes place in relation to understandings gained about production processes and the contributions made by, for instance, performers, directors and dramaturges. Students will have the opportunity to pursue an individual interest in depth in a practical research project. They will explore wider contexts of theatre-making, looking at some significant contemporary productions and practitioners, and seeing appropriate theatre productions in London. They will research the practice of a company or practitioner whose work informs their own aspirations. Students’ final portfolios will address their own development and future plans as a practitioner.
In 2005, sound facilities at Central were further enhanced and updated through investment of specific Government funding and donations of the latest sound equipment from Yamaha, which have helped to equip the brand new recording studio.
