Course Description:
The Drama and Theatre Arts programme aims to provide one of the finest environments for the study and creation of theatre and performance in the country. Its integrated approach of theory and practice helps to provide a creative and innovative learning environment for the development of 'engineers of the theatre' equipped with the creative imagination, conceptual sophistication and technical competence to interrogate, challenge and contribute to the practices and assumptions of contemporary world theatre. In the first year of study students undertake training in areas of sound, lighting and scenographic design on the course Processes of Theatre Making. Specialism in one of these areas may be extended in second year production work. Because Goldsmiths believes that the very best teaching is research-led, student-centred, creative and innovative, the teaching and learning offered by the programme are informed by the diverse and exciting research interests of staff in partnership with student's aspirations and special interests within a stimulating and flexible scheme of study. Details of these interests as well as current projects taking place in the Department can be viewed at the following web address: www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/departments/drama/.
Located within easy travelling distance to Central London, Goldsmiths offers obvious advantages to students of this degree - we are close to one of the largest concentrations of performance practice in Europe. In addition, a number or our staff are professional theatre-makers, so we enjoy good working relationships with theatres, media companies and professional specialists and practitioners, who make important contributions to our courses. On-campus, the George Wood Theatre provides space for teaching and performance (and seating for 160), and the Department also has three performance studios; scenic, sound and costume workshops; and design studio facilities.
