Head of Drama Department: David Llewellyn
Course Description:
The creative energies of the Drama department at LJMU are focused towards the production of new writing and stimulating theatre practice. We therefore emphasise, and actively encourage, experimentation and innovation. We like our students to take creative risks since we believe that only by doing this can the boundaries of the art form be challenged and re-invigorated.
Our programmes aim to nurture the growth of creative and critical skills. Through the practice and study of Drama we attempt to facilitate the greatest possible degree of artistic and intellectual independence in our students. We want them to graduate as thoughtful artists ready for a changing world.
Students will encounter a wide range of theatre practice including: acting, writing, technical work and directing. All students are encouraged to develop transferable creative skills and a personal critical voice. Practical workshops and production projects inform the programmes at all levels and theory-led modules allow students to develop independently reasoned points of view which are then assessed through exploratory seminars, presentations and discursive analytical essays. Group work underpins the teaching methods of the majority of our modules.
As a staff we are all practitioners and academics and we will provide the foundations for learning. The ethos of the department’s teaching, however, acknowledges that, at degree level, students have much to learn from their peers - both intellectually and practically. To this end, modules at Level 3 encourage a large degree of independence and self-generated work.
