Course Description:
The PLASA National Rigging Certificate is an award that will allow riggers to demonstrate that they’ve attained a professional standard within their chosen rigging discipline.
The Level 2 (rigger award) assessment measures general rigging competency, whilst the assessment for the Level 3 (supervising rigger award) focuses on supervisory elements, with each NRC being awarded on the basis of assessments carried out at a regional assessment centre, and, additionally for Level 3, in the candidate’s own workplace.
Drawn up to recognised National Occupational Standards in conjunction with Creative and Cultural Skills - the Sector Skills Council for the creative and cultural sectors - the NRC has been developed in direct response to two important factors that now directly affect riggers and their employers. These are the implementation of the Working At Height (2005) regulations and a trend of steadily rising insurance costs for companies and individuals in the sector.
The scheme has been developed by PLASA in close co-operation with the entertainment rigging industry’s NRC Advisory Group. In the case of candidates who are already experienced riggers, the NRC assessment process will take into account evidence of existing experience, including employer references, and will feature additional assessments on the NRC’s practical section and written questions to assess theoretical knowledge.
Possessing a National Rigging Certificate will demonstrate a recognised, standardised level of competence to employers, making it easier for both employers and employees to match their requirements, and in the longer term, to ease the insurance burden for freelancers. A Highway Code-style handbook sets out the essential details on which candidates will be assessed.
