Course Description:
This is a creative and practical course in Technical Theatre leading to a Foundation Degree with the possibility of proceeding onto the final year of a BA degree. Students on the course will develop vocational skills in Theatre Technology and Stage Management. They will learn to use a range of exciting technologies and will have the opportunity to work on different types of theatre production in different venues. The course will equip students with the necessary skills for a range of creative careers in the arts.
Year One: Introduction to Lighting Design and Operation; Introduction to Sound Design and Operation; Introduction to Stage Management and Administration; Theatre Technology in Context; Applied Technical Theatre. Year Two: Advanced Technical Training; Technical Theatre - Creative Project; Professional Project Cultural Industries. Throughout the course students will participate in programmes of technical training and in the use of technology within theatre productions. Work will be contextualised through the study of contemporary theatre practices. Modules are assessed through assignment work, including practical work, oral presentations and written documents. Successful students may progress on to honours degree programmes (2nd or 3rd year), further specialist training (non-degree), or employment. Students benefit from close links with professional theatre (in particular, the Oldham Coliseum) and from the vibrant drama activities and technical facilities at the University’s Huddersfield campus.
