Our unique integrated Performing Arts Technology environment covers everything from live performance to the technology of the live event, the studio, multimedia, and the design of studio equipment. It's a great environment to indulge students’ musical, technical and performance interests. It's an innovative engineering degree that allows them to study the theory, application and practice of sound system engineering, lighting, performance space design – as well as the underlying business aspects of the industry.
As live performances grow more spectacular, the technology becomes more complex, incorporating electronics, optics, acoustics, computer-aided design, simulation and control, electrical power, management, performance space design and team working. The programme is designed to give an understanding of fundamental electronic and physical principles as well as the knowledge of equipment, systems and performance environments.
Modules in the following areas are studied: analogue and digital electronics, computing, mathematics, light and optical theory, signal and communication theory, practical technical skills, lighting design, sound reinforcement, microprocessors, auditorium and performance space design, auditorium technology, elements of web design, acoustics, audio equipment design, digital signal processing and business management. An important module in the final year is independent studies, where students take a topic of their choice to a deep level of study.
The programme is taught through a mix of lectures, tutorials, laboratory and other practical work. The timetable contains around 16 hours of contact with staff a week, with around the same amount of time as ‘directed study’. All modules are supported through UDo, the University of Derby Online, so students have access to essential support materials at any time of the day or night.
Assessment is by a careful blend of assignment and examination. Assignments may relate to work at the computer, in the laboratory or studio, or may be a piece of written or analytical work. Some assignment work in the final year relates to actual performance situations to which students provide creative technical support.
