Description
At Hull, the syllabus for both
Singles and Joint Honours students is designed, and the department
equipped, to integrate all aspects of producing drama and theatre.
Plays are studied not only in seminar and lecture but also in
production; formal teaching is reinforced and illuminated by
practical work in our performance spaces and to the public in our
licensed main venue, the Donald Roy Theatre. At our department,
technical, physical and intellectual skills are employed at one and
the same time by engaging in theatre practice.
The Donald Roy Theatre is a
versatile and adaptable theatre space, housing a fly tower and
basement facilitating trapwork, the new refurbished seating enabling
all formats of staging (traverse, thrust and in-the-round). We also
have a second large performance space, the Anthony Minghella Studio,
the newly improved Old Boilerhouse and several other rehearsal and
performance spaces. Our technical facilities (equipped to near
professional standards), include a large design and construction
workshop, paintshop, wardrobe, several sound studios, design rooms
including CAD/CAM design suite and everything you would expect from a
working theatre. Students who are interested in technical theatre
will leave with broad experience and knowledge of the required
industry standard. Two thirds of our graduates go on to work in the
related industries with over half of those working in theatre.
