Course Description:
The
program offers both specific technical/production modules and the
opportunity to be assessed for technical elements in non-technical
performance modules. We have a long tradition of integrating
performance and design in the process of making theatre.
At level 4, all first years
complete a basic introduction to technical theatre in Production
Skills, with a focus on Lighting Design, Stage Design and Stage
Management. Performance and Documentation offers a progression in the
second semester for those wishing to add Multimedia and Audio Visual
design elements, integrated within a semester-long practical project.
At level 5, students explore a wide range of specialisms including
Design for Contemporary Performance in Contemporary Theatre
Production. At level 6, students are expected to specialise in their
chosen field and the Independent Study (dissertation) can be assessed
practically, written, or as a combination of both. As with levels 4
and 5, modules with practical outcomes allow Design, Technical or
Management elements to be assessed alongside Performance. Performance
and Creative Technologies 1 and 2 (levels 5 and 6) allow students to
collaborate with other disciplines, for example in the production of
short films, theatre events and multimedia performance.
We have three flat floor ‘black
box' performance studios in which we produce everything from
text-based theatre to contemporary dance. We host an annual Music
Festival on campus with Creative Music Technology Students -
‘SoundFest' and have a fortnightly program of visiting artists
‘On the Edge' including performance, spoken word, live music and
screening digital video and multimedia/interactive performance. Our
studios are places for experimentation and we encourage a playful,
practical approach to all the projects both module based and extra
curricular. Students may also add ‘free-electives' to their
portfolio of modules drawing on elements from Digital Media, Creative
Music Technology, Business Studies or many other programs.
The National Student Drama
Festival is hosted in Scarborough Annually and staffed by SANM
students who have the opportunity to participate as technical staff
or as part of a 40 strong local organisation team.
We welcome visits from prospective
students on the Open Days advertised on our website and by
arrangement to hear their questions and take a closer look at our
facilities in the beautiful seaside town of Scarborough.
