Rigging training FAQs
Q. Does the course make you 'qualified' as a rigger?
A. Attending a training course cannot make you 'competent' but it is a start and will identify areas you will need to better understand and gain experience in. In the UK it is legally required for employers to provide training for a work activity where there are risks to your health or safety (or anyone else's) as a result of work you do. Training at Total Training will help to satisfy that requirement.
The only qualification available in the UK is the National Rigging Certificate (see below)
Q. I'm self employed, do I need to be trained, too?
A. Yes. You are responsible for yourself and therefore should provide yourself with appropriate training in the same way as any other employer. You should also be able to carry out risk assessments and have at least generic method statements, for example.
Make sure you are genuinely self-employed. You may invoice clients and pay tax as a self employed person but you may be treated as an employee with regard to health and safety law.
Q. Will I stand a better chance of getting work with the certificate?
A. We hope Total Training courses will improve your chances, but we obviously cannot guarantee it.
There are a number of complimentary courses that you can take. For rigging there is the Safe Working Ltd ropework and rigging course, for hoist maintenance the famous CM Lodestar 'motor schools' run by companies such as LiftTurnMove, and there are numerous manufacturers’ and suppliers’ courses available.
We will be pleased to provide details of other courses on request.
PLASA National Rigging Certificate
Total Training rigging courses should help provide background knowledge that you will need for assessment for the National Rigging Certificate. Further information is available from www.plasa.org/rigging
