Course Description:
Course Aims
This 10-day course is aimed at anyone aged 16 plus who is interested in developing skills in stage management and production technology. It may be useful for anyone wishing to pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field.
By the end of the course participants should have:
- Developed an awareness of the production process from initial design through to striking
the set - Worked with experienced industry professionals to develop and expand specialist skills
- Gained greater insight into how management and technology functions within the context of the performing arts
- Participated in a collaborative practical project culminating in a presentation
Course Content
This course will be delivered by the Academy’s Production Lecturers and visiting guest specialists.
Week one will consist of practical workshops and teaching in all areas of management and technology for performance. Participants will be set mini projects throughout the week to apply this knowledge in a practical way.
The second week involves working with design students and performers on a larger scale collaborative project. This is an opportunity for participants to practice their specialist learning and knowledge as a team in a more holistic way.
This project will culminate in a tangible outcome in the form of a presentation on the final day of the course. This may provide participants with evidence for portfolio building as well as an opportunity to present the product of the projects work to others.
The course will provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment in which all participants from beginners to advanced can explore and learn.

Course Leader
Ros Maddison
Ros has been leading the BA Technical and Production Arts programme since 2002 before which she taught Stage Management at the Academy for four years. Having trained at RSAMD in the 1980s, Ros’ professional theatre career started at TAG Theatre Company, where she spent four years working through the stage management ranks, culminating in the role of Company Stage Manager for a British Council tour of A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Following this she worked extensively throughout Scotland as a freelance Stage and Production Manager including projects with Dundee Rep Theatre, the Tron Theatre, boilerhouse, NVA, PACE Theatre Company, SYT and many others, working particularly on medium scale touring shows, site specific projects and large-scale community productions. As well as being Head of Production for RSAMD, Ros is currently the External Examiner for the BA Stage Management course at Rose Bruford College, the Technical Courses at RADA and has participated in curriculum reviews for the Scottish Qualifications Agency and Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
Additional Information
No previous knowledge is required but a keen interest in design for performance is important.
Steel toe capped safety boots may be required throughout the course. These can be provided by the Academy if requested in advance.
Participants should also bring a notepad and pen to make notes during the classes.
At the end of the course participants are expected to participate in a full evaluation of their experience to help us develop courses in the future.

Your Course
Your course is run by the Technical and Production Arts (TPA) programme at RSAMD. The three year undergraduate programme provides stage management and production training in areas such as stage design, set construction, set design, stage technology and stage management.
Workshops and master classes with distinguished industry practitioners are integrated into the curriculum ensuring that the quality, values and standards of training remain current and competitive. Students also collaborate with a number of theatre companies in Scotland such as the National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, Citizens Theatre, Festival Theatre Edinburgh and the National Review of Live Art.
Hands-on experience, team work and collaboration are key to the course structure. This approach is rooted in professional practice, which is why our graduates have the broadest range of career opportunities and are likely to find employment within weeks of graduating.
Access to the Academy
The Academy is committed to widening access to the performing and production arts.
The majority of our courses are designed to allow students to explore the performance and production arts fully and enable students of differing abilities the opportunity to grow and develop through participation in the arts.
All courses are held at the Academy which is an accessible building with a lift, accessible toilets and accessible teaching spaces.
