Programme Director Drama: Trevor Walker
Course Description:
The
Theatre programmes at St. Mary's locate themselves between the
traditional university and the drama school. There is a strong focus
on making theatre and creative thinking, the aim of which is to equip
students not just for the theatre of today but to prepare them for
the theatre of the future.
Most of the lecturers are also
professional theatre practitioners: actors, directors, playwrights
and designers and two are co-directors of professional companies,
Punchdrunk and New International Encounter. Academics also regularly
publish theatre books and articles. Visiting lecturers represent all
the major theatre companies including the RNT, RSC, Out of Joint,
Theatre de Complicite and Frantic Assembly.
The course is taught as a modular
system and students have the choice of a range of options. It is
possible to specialize in performance, directing, stage-management,
lighting, set or costume design as well as the more lecture-seminar
based courses in theatre theory, history and contemporary practice.
Assessment varies between modules
but includes performance, practical and oral presentations, essays,
portfolios and exams.
The Drama and Performance Studies
programme has a designated adaptable theatre and three studios
equipped with the latest computerised lighting and sound systems.
There are television and radio studios and video editing suites. Each
of the spaces operates with the support of full time specialist
technicians. The Learning Resources Centre is well stocked with books
and periodicals, journals and videos relating to the subject area.
Applied (Community) Theatre
modules are very popular and students regularly take workshops and
performances to local community venues as well as international
events in Europe and Africa.
Proximity to London offers the
opportunity to exploit the capital's arts resources and to visit
the theatre.
