Reader in 20th Century and Contemporary Drama: Dr Steve Nicholson
Theatre Technician: Rob Hemus
Course Description:
Drama
at Sheffield is based on the integration of theory and practice
through courses undertaken in our excellent studio and workshop
spaces. Students are assessed on both their practical contribution,
and their ability to contextualise and to reflect on practice using,
as appropriate, analytical, theoretical and historical approaches. We
value in particular creative and disciplined engagement, commitment
to the group, a willingness to experiment and test ideas, and the
ability to demonstrate understanding and discoveries through
presentations and performances as well as in writing.
Although this is a degree
programme, rather than one which specifically seeks to offer
professional training, the rich cultural context and the teaching
methods provide opportunities for developing a broad range of
professional skills linked to the theatre industry. Not only are the
staff themselves involved in practical work, but we also enjoy very
strong links with the city´s Crucible Theatre (one of the country´s
leading repertory companies), and with a range of professional
practitioners who contribute to our teaching. Training is provided
for all undergraduates in the basics of theatre practice - lighting,
sound, flying, staging, event management.
