Course Description:
Drama
& Performance is a vibrant and creative course which contributes
to a rich diversity of performance both inside the University and in
the local community. Theatre visits are central to the experience and
we are well placed and have easy access to a range of local venues in
addition to Birmingham, Warwick and the RSC at Stratford-upon-Avon.
The range of performances available is therefore exciting and varied.
This is supplemented by inviting professional companies and
practitioners to run workshops with students across the year groups.
These have included classes in acting, dance, mask work, puppetry and
physical theatre with companies including Improbable Theatre, Stan
Won't Dance, Graeae, and Geese Theatre.
The course comprises directed and
self-directed public performances, which can be either scripted or
devised; applied theatre; political theatre; theatre and digital
media; classical drama; community based, studio and site-specific
performance. Whilst this is not a technical theatre course, students
are introduced to these aspects and expected to be able to offer
design ideas and operate for productions within the framework of the
ensemble. The emphasis throughout the course is learning through
practice, which enables students to engage with ideas on both a
creative and academic level. The increasing popularity of the course
means that we are able to offer a wide range of options and
consequently students have the opportunity focus on areas of
particular interest whilst developing a deeper and real understanding
of drama and performance.
