Course Description:
Based on the University's
Canterbury Campus, the unique four year Single Honours Undergraduate
Degree in Drama & Theatre Studies culminates in a
‘pre-professional' fourth year where students take one year-long
specialism, consisting of master classes and workshops with guest
lecturers and visiting practitioners as well as contacts to and
placements in the profession. Apart from specialisms such as
Contemporary Performance Practice, Creative Producing & Managing
Theatre, Theatre Dramaturgy and Performance Applications, we offer
Master-specialisms in Design for Performance (Scenography) and
Technical Production Design (Light & Sound). These specialisms
are preceded by three years examining the history and theory of
theatre both in classroom- and workshop-based modules which share
their common focus on the theatre industry and professional
practices, both nationally and internationally; this includes modules
relevant in the area of technical theatre such as Stage Practice,
Mise-en-Scène, Places in Performance, and Scenography. The final
intense year of specialised study gives students a significant
advantage when graduating and entering the profession, and allows
them to obtain a unique undergraduate master's level degree,
comparable to the MSc and other professionally focused undergraduate
degrees.
The undergraduate programme in
Drama & Theatre Studies is also available as combined, three-year
long Joined Honours-course, of which the new Joint Honours-programme
in Theatre & Multimedia (starting from September 2007) will be of
particular interest. Taught in interdisciplinary collaboration, this
special programme combines creative processes and studies of theatre
and multimedia, exploring topics such as 3D-modeling, animation,
digital film making, theatre design, and performance history.
