Course Description:
This
programme aims to give individuals the confidence, motivation and
skills to produce high quality and innovative performance work and to
act as agents of change and development in the industry. Based in the
thriving cultural diversity of Manchester, students develop their
critical awareness of the position and function of the performing
arts in our society, in addition to professional and business skills.
The programme is suitable for
those with drama performance skills and a desire for a career in the
performing arts, entertainment and cultural industries. Students on
this programme create a small-scale theatre company to support their
learning process, which also provides excellent opportunities to gain
essential marketing and business skills. The focus is on
project-based work provided in conjunction with several external
partners, including Urbis and Zion Arts. The programme features
taught elements to support the essential theoretical content of the
teaching and learning; but also experience in the work place. The
programme aims to give students the requisite skills to engage as
theatre practitioners across a range of contemporary settings, to
develop an area of interest, or to progress to an honours degree.
Students can study many of the
units within the work place to enhance good practice and to give
credit in the form of a qualification to high standards of existing
practice. The philosophy of the programme reflects the overarching
ethos of The Arden, in that it aims to produce practitioners who are
self-reliant and have a robust understanding and knowledge of the
processes involved in making theatre. It harnesses existing good
practice within The Arden and meets the needs and demands of
contemporary forms of theatre and the industry. In response to
extensive consultation, the programme creates a real interface with
the industry both in teaching and learning and in the professional
environment.
Assessment is by coursework and
there are no formal exams. Students are assessed on their practical
project work both individually and collectively. They are also
expected to develop the traditional skills of academic analysis and
writing for essay assignments and other documentation. It is
anticipated that elements of study and assessment will be undertaken
using a virtual learning environment to enable students to continue
their studies whilst working on placements and production activities.
