Course Description:
This full-time professional course in Technical Theatre Studies is intended to prepare students for a career in theatre and related fields. This course allows students to become part of the creative team producing performances, working alongside actors, directors, designers and musicians for both live and recorded performances.
In the first year, all students will be given an intensive grounding in stage management, scenery construction, props, lighting, sound, costume and related skills.
In the second year, students will begin to select specialist areas of study, which will include stage management, lighting, sound, scenery construction and costume.
In the optional third year, students will specialise in one or two areas of work, and will be given opportunities for work placement to support their development. Training for theatre near London is one of the great advantages of the course and students will be exposed to the latest developments in one of the great theatre capitals of the world.
Students will be given the skills and confidence to make and develop their own work. Each intake will be limited, making the student teacher ratio 1 to 6. Students will acquire skills under close guidance, but will be given the opportunity to take responsibility and act as professionals before graduation.
The course is based in a new specialist building, recently developed for East 15 by the University of Essex. The course follows all of the requirements of NCDT and all students will become members of ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians) upon enrolment.
