Course Description:
The course is designed to equip students with all the necessary skills for a career as professional Stage Managers and Theatre Technicians. All students study the managerial, practical and technical disciplines of Stage Management and Technical Theatre. The second year is predominantly production-based, giving students the opportunity to practise their chosen discipline through working intensively on a wide variety of productions in different theatre spaces. Teaching is progressive building from the classroom to live projects and finally to live production. The key element of the course is confidence. The confidence to tackle any problem and see it as a challenge to be overcome.
How do we build this confidence? Each term is divided into teaching, workshop and technical project. In term 1 there are 8 weeks teaching and 4 weeks secondment to one of the schools workshops: Construction/LX/Design(inc.scene painting)/Stage Management before finishing the term with a technical project . In term 2 this ratio is changed to 4 weeks teaching and two 4 week secondments in a workshopbefore finishing the term with a technical project. In term 3 there are 2 weeks teaching followed by the final workshop secodnment before working on a production which is the final technical project. Students decide on the flavour of the course themselves through the choices available on productions. At every stage students are encouraged to explore and question through additional classes and masterclasses.
The strength of the School of Musical Theatre provides a unique opportunity for students to work in one of the most demanding areas of theatre today and this work is supported with dance notation and score reading classes and tutorials. Students are also required to attend voice, body conditioning and stage combat classes.
This is a practical course where evidence of learning is obtained through the ability of the student to do the job, whether with staff in class, workshop and production situations or with visiting professionals in a production setting.
