Course Description:
This programme combines the theory and practice of drama. The two approaches are seen not merely as complementary but as indivisible in the study of drama and theatre at degree level. The main teaching modes comprise seminar discussion and practical workshop sessions, which explore play texts, theoretical writings, performance traditions and techniques, and examine the theatre's role and function in society throughout history. European, American, Asian and other non-Western theatre traditions are studied as well as British theatre. Technical theatre, lighting, sound, set and costume, television drama, and playwriting are also available. Practical work takes place primarily in the Department's theatre spaces and rehearsal rooms. The Robert Martin Theatre (seating up to 300) has a proscenium arch, which is easily adapted to accommodate other forms of production. The Leonard Dixon Drama Studio is a flexible black box space seating up to 120, and the Rehearsal Room is a smaller studio seating up to 38. All three spaces were completely refurbished in 2008 and are equipped with industry-standard lighting, sound and projection facilities.
Working in Performance Spaces is a compulsory module in Year 1, with Technical Theatre as an additional option. In Years 2 and 3 optional modules include: Costume Design, Lighting Design, Technical Theatre (Advanced), Television Studies, Puppetry, Stage Media and Theatre Practice.
