Course Description:
(Technical Theatre & Stage Management I level)
This two-year course is open to all from age 18 - no educational qualifications required. The purpose of the Foundation Degree is to train students for a career in theatre and related fields. Following a broad first year which covers all the major areas included within the broad scope of Techncial Theatre Arts, the second year allows the student to concentrate an area of production work that they wish to follow into a career. Typically with half the students opting for stage Management and the others spread across a wide range of other activities. The production techniques learned are applicable to many areas of public presentation such as theatre, television and video, trade shows and conferences, exhibitions and theme work. The course embraces all the disciplines involved in the mounting of professional performances, including lighting, sound, design and scenic art, scenic construction, property making, wardrobe, stagecraft and stage management. Students are encouraged to broaden their vision through visits to museums, art galleries, exhibitions, buildings of architectural interest, theatres and television studios.
Students spend their first year in classes and practical workshops. Alongside the teaching, they work in every production department, experiencing a wide range of technical skills and production techniques.
In their second year, students work on the Academy's productions in a full-time capacity. Some 16 productions are mounted each year for presentation to the public. These offer students an opportunity to work with professional designers and directors in wide ranging areas of responsibility, including stage management. During the second year, each student spends between four and six weeks on attachment to a professional theatre or organisation relevant to the career they wish to pursue. The two year foundation degree can be followed by a completion year (following further application) in order to complete the full BA qualification.
