Programme Leader for Performance Management: Graham Price
Course Description:
The BA Performance Management (BAPM) combines the study of two fields that are professionally recognised as Stage Management and Arts Management, to offer a broad-based and practically grounded learning experience that covers key aspects of managing performance, including production and technical management as well as arts administration and front of house management. The fields of study represented in this course run successfully as Bachelor of Arts Programmes both nationally and internationally. What makes this programme unique is the way in which Stage Management and Arts Management are brought together allowing a dynamic exploration of common objectives.
BAPM operates in the context of the well-established community of performing arts provision that thrives at the University of Winchester. This portfolio currently includes degree programmes in Choreography and Dance, Drama, Performing Arts, Screen Production, Community Theatre and Media and a Foundation Degree in Creative Industries and MA Arts Management. The programme takes full advantage of this extensive and vibrant performing arts environment.
The creation and management of live performance is a complex and demanding process which requires careful planning, the fostering of safe working practices, good communication skills, sensitivity to the feelings and views of others and the ability to think clearly, responding quickly and effectively to a wide range of production and performance challenges. A core principle of the programme is to foster an approach to all management activities that enables and does not not inhibit the creative process with the proviso that all activities are safe and sustainable.
The programme will explore management strategies that are able to respond to different performance environments and the demands of performance practitioners who are often pushing the envelope of artistic possibility in a society that does not always understand the creative process and increasingly insists on complex systems of accountability.
You can also take a combined honours option that would combine the study of Stage Management with Drama, Performing Arts or Choreography and Dance or choose to study Arts Management with any of the aforemetioned options.
