Leader Performing Arts Courses: John Topping
Course Description:
This course is designed for students wishing to explore the application of technical arts skills to the making of live performance. It is ideal for students with a real interest in lighting, sound, production management, stage management, administration and set and costume design.
The course centres on developing skills and knowledge and, most importantly, being a central member of the teams involved in the production and technical aspects of the Institute’s many undergraduate productions.
Our resources are good. In addition to the main theatre and studio theatre there are support facilities for production and access to the Institute’s other workshops, most importantly in sound recording and video. There are rehearsal rooms, a singing room and conventional teaching spaces at the main campus, as well as a dance studio, two drama studios and other rehearsal rooms at Stanwix House.
In Year One we start by introducing students to the various roles involved in production: lighting and sound design, set and costume design, stage management and company administration. In Year Two they will be working as a technical practitioner in a variety of roles in productions directed by full-time staff and visiting practitioners. By the end of the year, through close involvement in at least six major productions, students should have experienced, applying their skills in lighting and sound design, stage management, company administration and design realisation. At the end of the year they can choose either a work placement or to negotiate their own performance or research project. This module is very flexible, allowing for exploration of potential future careers.
In Year Three students will be able to follow through their specialised interests by attachment to various staff-led companies in dance, drama and musical theatre. Additionally, they will work as a core member of student-led companies, developing and producing original work. They will conclude their theoretical work by researching and writing an extended essay on a special subject of interest within the area of technical arts. Finally, they will prepare a professional portfolio.
Technical Theatre is offered only as part of the Joint Honours Performance Pathways programme with Dance, Drama or Music Theatre Performance Pathways.
