Course Description:
The
BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students
learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on
realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as
learning about the employment area chosen, they develop the skills
needed to start a career.
It is equivalent to three A levels
which means when students have finished the course they can choose
whether to get a job straight away or go into higher education first.
The course is made up of 17 units
- five core units which everyone takes and 12 specialist units. The
core unit in Production (Major Project) counts as two units. The
specialist units enable students to study particular areas in depth.
All students take the five core
units: Production Workshop, The Performing Arts Business, Performing
Arts in Context, Production Planning, Production (Major Project).
They take twelve specialist units from the following list: Background
to Performance, Arts in the Community, Arts Administration 1, Arts
Administration 2, Events Management, ASM, DSM, SM, Technical
Maintenance, Electrical Installation, Electronics in the Theatre,
Technical Theatre Operations, Lighting 1, Lighting 2, Automated
Lighting, Sound 1, Sound 2, Live Sound, Scenic Construction, Scenic
Painting, The Freelance World, Legal Aspects.
In the first year, students will
work with staff that are all practising professionals in many aspects
of the performing arts and will develop technical skills through a
range of practical performance projects. In an extremely creative
environment, students will have the opportunity to show the skills
they have developed in helping to organise and run a performing arts
festival.
Second year students can develop
their technical creativity by specialising in their chosen field of
stage management, set construction, lighting and sound design and
gain more experience of working on a number of productions, whilst
receiving one-to-one career guidance to help prepare and apply to
university or college through UCAS, or to seek work
experience/employment. Included in the curriculum are educational
trips to the theatre to see a varied selection of performance work.
The Majority of our students
successfully apply to degrees and foundation degrees. A number of our
students are offered places at some of the most prestigious training
providers in the UK. Some students prefer to stay closer to home and
apply to our degree courses at Hereford.
