Course Leader MA Advanced Theatre Practice: Nick Wood
Course Description:
The Lighting Design strand is part of the group of subjects that comprise MA Advanced Theatre Practice, designed especially for individuals wishing to create new and innovative work for the theatre as part of a company.
When joining the course as a lighting designer students start out by working in their separate theatre discipline. As the year progresses they will soon be working with colleagues from other strands, exploring an integrated language of theatre and building creative teams for the future.
The Lighting Design strand is for those who may have some experience in lighting design or a related discipline. Students will work especially closely with colleagues following the Theatre Design strand in order to explore the spatial, architectural and material qualities of theatre environments, and they will be encouraged to contribute creatively to the development of projects. Students will examine different ways of lighting theatre and performance using a range of technologies, and may have a direct responsibility for the operational aspects (lighting, filming, video editing, projection) of the multi-media work developed on the course. They will work as a lighting designer on a range of performances during the year.
This strand allows students to develop further their own abilities as a lighting designer and to learn from other experienced practitioners. They will benefit from working with colleagues in groups and companies, so that their own development as a practitioner takes place in relation to understandings gained about production processes and the contributions made by, for instance, directors, dramaturges and writers.
Students will have the opportunity to pursue an individual interest in depth in a practical research project, and will explore wider contexts of theatre-making, looking at some significant contemporary productions and practitioners, and seeing appropriate theatre productions in London. They will research the practice of a company or practitioner whose work informs their own aspirations. The final portfolio will address their own development and future plans as a practitioner.
