Course Description:
The purpose of this two-year course is to provide a broad based practical training in the area of Stage Design, enabling students to pursue a career as a theatre designer, or in other similarly related fields. The course will cover all aspects of stage design: technical, creative and managerial. The aim of the course will be to prepare a student, who has already demonstrated a clear aptitude for this work, for a career in a theatre company or other related organisation within the entertainment industry.
Each year is divided into three terms of 12 weeks. Each term consists of a mixture of practical project work and work on the Academy public productions.
Term 1: This term aims to introduce the students not only to the discipline of stage design but also to other disciplines involved in technical theatre. Students will join the Theatre Technical Arts students in sessions: scenic art; scenic construction; stagecraft; prop-making; stage lighting; wardrobe; health and safety; stage management. In addition the student will begin their career as a stage designer with project work designs to develop their skills of observation, text analysis, creative interpretation and communication.
Term 2: The student will spend time in the props, scenic art and wardrobe departments. They may also choose to continue a creative exploration of theatre lighting. Students also learn to develop their research skills further. In this term students will develop a growing understanding of both the practical skills and creative aspects to the design of a stage production.
Term 3: Project work occupies the student during this period. In addition the student will study the design process through to 'preliminary' presentation of model and costuming with technical drawings aiming for Effective Communication, Presentation Skills and Creative and Technical interpretations.
Term 4: This term deals with expanding the creative identity in design, the alternative and/or flexible space and Genre and Style of theatrical expression. The student will develop their personality as a designer, in particular in the fields of musical theatre, and communication via 2D and 3D presentation.
Term 5: This term deals with developing the students' own pathway to graduation and concentrates on expanding conceptual design, with opportunities to expand the creative identity of the individual, unhindered by practical limitations. A secondment will occupy part of this term.
Term 6: The final term of the course aims to develop the students' practical role on productions in a supervisory role, as well as a further secondment to develop the students' industry knowledge by spending time with a professional company or practitioner. Specialist interests are also supported in this term.
