Course Description:
This new degree scheme takes a fresh and radical approach to design in the context of performance-making and theatre. Looking at and beyond the established boundaries of 'set', 'costume', 'lighting' and 'sound' design, Scenographic Studies takes a total view of the performance space and regards the organisation of this space as an expressive artistic practice in its own right. From such a viewpoint, the horizon broadens. Through a combination of theoretical and practical explorations, Scenographic Studies looks at a wide range of contemporary practices from playhouse theatre to site-specific performance, from traditional set design through installation to landscape art. As the degree scheme progresses, the focus of study sharpens steadily upon your own practice as an independent scenographic artist/designer, applying your acquired knowledge and skills to the making of work that is fresh, radical and expressive within and beyond the context of theatre.
Scenographic Studies is available as both a single and Joint Honours scheme, and as such is highly compatible with the Joint Honours Performance Studies scheme, Drama, Film and Television Studies and other disciplines within the Faculty of Arts. The scheme employs a range of innovative teaching methods and assessment assignments, including multi-media lecture/demonstrations and audio/video/mixed media student submissions. At the end of the course students will have acquired a broad range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills applicable to a variety of careers within the creative media and beyond. They will also take with them a personal portfolio of work generated as both physical material and as a personal web site constructed and developed during the journey of the scheme. It is also intended that this journey should in itself be rewarding as an exploration of the inexhaustible possibilities of performance space and its design, and through the enhancement and development of the individual way of seeing.
