Course Description:
This is the only course of its kind in the U.K. which is set in a Theatre School and integrated with a producing company, training designers in a realistic environment, working closely with directors, actors and technicians. The aim is to cater for people of postgraduate standard who wish to adapt their talents and previous training to Theatre Design. A maximum of four students is selected, each being expected to bring a comprehensive portfolio of art work to the interview. Entry is not limited to those with previous training though the majority of students do come from degree courses.
The first two terms of this four term course are concerned with introducing the students to professional practice and the skills involved. Classes in Design, Model-making, Technical Drawing, CAD, Architectural/Costume History, Carpentry, and Painting provide a background to design projects, through which each student carries out complete production designs. A further project in Film and Television Design is led by professional outside Production Designers in collaboration with tutors at Christchurch Studios. Certain projects will be closely linked with the students on the MA course in Drama Directing. During the third term, the students design public productions under supervision, so seeing the whole design process through from first discussions with the director to models, working drawings, construction, painting and the realisation of their work on stage. The fourth term involves designing for the final ‘showcase' productions. The designers also work with the MA directors on their graduation shows of new writing at the Alma Tavern in Bristol. Alongside this, each student is helped individually to prepare a c.v. and portfolio and the last weeks of the course are spent mounting the end of year exhibitions at the Bristol Old Vic and at a central London venue. There are also interviews with prospective employers. Many graduates have made careers in Television, Film, Opera and Dance as well as in Theatre.
The course prides itself on producing designers who are fully equipped to do the job immediately.
