Course Description:
The theatre Scenic Artist works collaboratively with the theatre set designer and other members of the theatre design and production teams. The Scenic Artist creates the painted and textural elements of the stage set or performance environment (be it in the theatre, video, television and film industries). Students will develop skills in research, analysis, interpretation and materials, together with a high level of technical artistic competence in drawing, painting, colour theory and working to scale, all to a professional standard.
Study will indicatively include: Working with a professional designer to produce samples for a reproduction of an existing texture or fine art painting; Transcribing an image from a 1:25 scale onto a pre-prepared stage flat; Working as part of a scenic art team on a studio production; Learning and applying advanced painting techniques; Painting a cloth for a public production; Designing and painting a mural for a project or production; Being the Head of Department on a full-scale realised production in the Embassy Studio, managing other students painting scenery and treating specific props; Working with a professional company to paint scenery for a West End show.
