Course Leader Theatre Practice: Caroline Townsend
Course Leader MA Advanced Theatre Practice: Nick Wood
Course Description:
Some of the major innovations in theatre practice over the last hundred years have emerged from scenographic experiment. This groundbreaking new course approaches scenography in a European tradition, not merely as design for theatre, but as the authorship of performative space.
The course is designed for those wishing to develop their undergraduate fine art training (e.g. installation or live art) within a European scenographic tradition as well as those wishing to develop their design skills as scenographic art.
Central is based in and around the Embassy Theatre, where Gordon Craig, one of the cornerstones of the European scenographic tradition, directed and designed Dido and Aeneas in 1900.
Within Central's ‘total' theatre training environment you will have the opportunity, according to your existing skill-base, to develop your scenographic process through working with set, costume, lighting, sound, video, object animation or puppetry and through the creative use/misuse of emerging digital technologies. You will work primarily as an individual artist in the ‘speculative space' of the studio, but you will also work collaboratively with other students or professionals, depending on the nature of your work.
Study will include:
-
study perception, representation, aesthetics and the theories of performance within a historical framework
-
extend understanding of your process through theoretical and practice-based research
-
investigate the transdisciplinary spectrum of scenography in relation to architecture and urbanism, sculpture and spatial arts, curation, graphic and visual arts, as well as to film and photography.
